I'll write a bit in coming posts about some of my favorite books.

Among Larry McMurtry's many novels, some of which I enjoyed greatly and have read more than once, some I was very disappointed in (and one was so bad that I refused to finish), he wrote four outstanding books known as The Lonesome Dove Series. Many people are familiar with the one titled, "Lonesome Dove", and most people have seen the epic television mini-series with the same title starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones.

I enjoyed the mini-series, and it was one of the very few movies in which a good portrayal of the book was made with the screen adaptation, even though there were extensive portions of the book that had to be left out of the movie to meet time constraints (and television content regulations).

The book's storyline takes place mostly in locations that I am very familiar with and love dearly. The sights, smells, sounds and general feeling really came off the pages to me, and many of the characters were quite like people that I have known and worked with throughout the years.

That all being said, I will post soon about the individual books in the Lonesome Dove series, which would make great Christmas gifts for family and friends who are readers and lovers of good stories. And if you, as a reader yourself have not read through these great novels, I highly recommend them for holiday reading. Most avid readers I've talked books with either have read, or intend to read the novel, "Lonesome Dove" someday, but few even know about, much less have read the other books in the series, and they should!
