In the Lonesome Dove series of books by Larry McMurtry, "Lonesome Dove" is by far the most widely known and read. Knowing of my love for desert areas, especially in West Texas, many friends told me I needed to read the book. At the time, I'd not even seen the movie by the same name, so I knew very little about the book's story-line.

"Lonesome Dove" was a wonderful book, and I've read it twice now. Being extremely familiar with most of the country where the story takes place, I could see and smell the scenes throughout the book. I'll refrain from giving many details of the plot, as you need it discover it on your own, but the story is quite an epic tale of Augustus “Gus” McRae and Woodrow Call in their life and death struggles with cattle, nature and rough characters throughout the book. The story takes place during the mid to late 1870's.

Out of all the books I've read in my life, Lonesome Dove is easily in the top few on my favorites list. I highly recommend it for your own enjoyment as well as gifts for friends and family. Keep in mind though, that much of the material deals with topics that are not suited for children or those with sensitivity to descriptions of harsh subjects.
