What’s the Most Popular Major at Texas Tech University?

The start of the fall semester is in full swing as students from all over begin life at Texas Tech University. This semester marks the largest number of enrolled students that the university has ever seen at just over 45,000.

I always wonder what all these students want to pursue. What are the common degree paths that Red Raiders are most likely to pick? Well, thanks to people far smarter than me, we have that answer.

Major Kudos to Texas Tech

The first day of the fall semester kicked off on August 24, so let's take a look at the most common degree paths on campus.

I want to first congratulate Texas Tech for holding the number three spot on Niche's Top Public Universities in Texas.

Common Majors at TTU

Let's start with the least popular to the most popular. According to reports from the past two years, social sciences and education were tied at the bottom, accounting for 4% of total degrees.

Next is interdisciplinary studies (programs made up of several disciplines) and psychology at 5% each.

This next one surprised me. Agricultural degrees along with plant and animal sciences made up just 6% of total degree paths. I just assumed that number would be higher given how prominent agriculture is in West Texas.

Human sciences took the middle of the board at 8% while communications, biomedical sciences and engineering took spots two through four at 9% each.

Finally, the most popular degree path over the past two years at Texas Tech was — you guessed it — a business degree at 21%! Well, business, management, and marketing, to be exact.

So, the next time someone tells you what their degree is, even if it was earned decades ago, you now know how unique they actually are, if at all.
