What Explains Texas Tech Football’s Undefeated Run This Season?
Texas Tech has had an incredible regular season so far. After four weeks, the Red Raiders remain undefeated at 4-0. So, what can we look at to explain this phenomenal run thus far? Several key factors are in play, but one player stands out above the rest.
Red Raider Football Success
Before we look at the hard hitters on the team, let's first look at Texas Tech's current standing in the AP Top 25 College Football Rankings.
Heading into week 5, Texas Tech currently sits at No. 12, despite remaining undefeated this season. This is because the AP rankings assign a point value to each team that takes into account several other factors aside from wins and losses. Texas Tech currently has 1053 points, and the No. 12 spot is one rank lower than where they were last week.
Player of the Week
Texas Tech linebacker Austin Romaine recently earned the title of Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week thanks to an impressive performance against Sam Houston in week 4.
What stood out the most from Romaine's performance that earned him the title was when he brought back two pick-six interceptions, fueling the momentum that earned Texas Tech the victory over Sam Houston, 49-14.
Check out the plays for yourself from the Texas Tech Football Facebook page:
Romaine also led the team in tackles with a whopping eight, and he was the first Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) player since 2012 to earn a pick-six interception in back-to-back plays.
Since 2025, the conference has been recognizing multiple players for each award, and Romaine shares Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week with Oklahoma State linebacker Ethan Wesloski.
The Red Raiders travel to Boulder this Saturday to face Colorado. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m., and you can explore viewing options on the Texas Tech Athletics website.
