Texas Tech football players make millions of dollars in NIL deals, something that was unheard of prior to 2021. So, who are some of the top players with the most dollar signs in NIL values?

What is NIL?

For those who may not know, "NIL" stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. NIL deals allow college athletes to legally control how their personal image is used. This is most common with sponsorship deals.

A good example of this is Colorado's former quarterback Shedeur Sanders, son of former NFL cornerback Deion Sanders, and his multi-million-dollar deal with Nike.

This concept is relatively new, having begun in 2021 when the NCAA changed its rules to finally allow college athletes to profit from their names, images, and likenesses. Before 2021, athletes would essentially forfeit any rights to NIL deals when playing on college teams.

As tempting as NIL deals with major businesses are, colleges cannot use them as recruitment tools for young, post-high school athletes.

Highest-Valued College Football Players

Texas happens to have some of the highest-valued college players, according to The NIL Standard. These numbers shouldn't be taken as exact, but serve as a good indicator of current or potential NIL deal totals.

UT's quarterback, Arch Manning, is currently the highest-valued college athlete in terms of NIL potential at $6.8 million.

Texas Tech NIL Value

Texas Tech's very own quarterback, Will Hammond, sits at an estimated NIL value of $1,822,500. The only other Red Raider listed higher than Hammond is offensive tackle Howard Sampson with a cool $2 million NIL estimated value.

The total estimated NIL value of Texas Tech University's football team is $33.1 million. Now, that's a lot of money, for sure, but Texas Tech is just the 10th school on the list. These are the top five schools ranked in order of their estimated NIL values:

Who's surprised that UT has the highest NIL value? You can see the full list, and other college football and basketball NIL rankings on The NIL Standard website.
