With Thanksgiving less than a week away, the City of Lubbock Solid Waste Department is sharing tips on how to cut down waste over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

The Solid Waste Department provides tips on how to cut down the amount of waste you produce over large gatherings to gift giving.

For Thanksgiving meals, studies show that if you can plan out what you buy, you will buy less, since you know what you're going to need. When preparing meals, see what ingredients can be used for other items, and not just what you needed them for originally.

Leftovers should be stored in plastic see-through containers. If you have guests over, you can even send them home with some of those leftovers. Ingredients you ended up not using all of could potentially be used for recipes later on, too.

Any fats, oils or greases that are produced when making your meals should not be thrown down the drain, as they can clog your pipes. You can, however, throw it away with regular trash, as long as it's paired with something absorbent like used napkins.

You can also bring any fats, oils or greases produced to the Solid Waste Department themselves at 1631 84th Street, where they will recycle it.
