This Police Officer’s Amazing Johnny Cash Cover Is a Viral Smash
Sadly, Johnny Cash has not risen from the dead to sing "Folsom Prison Blues," but this police officer definitely channels him.
That's Officer Billy Morgan from Texas whose rendition of the famous song is so spot-on that he sounds a lot like the Man in Black himself. The San Antonio cop took to his guitar during roll call recently, stunning his fellow officers — and more than 400,000 Facebook viewers — with his talent.
Dressed in his own black uniform, Morgan does the legendary country star justice with a soft, but sturdy vocal delivery that closely resembles Cash's original version. And how about those guitar skills?
“I know it’s a song about going to prison, but it’s one of my favorite Johnny Cash songs,” Morgan tells San Antonio's KENS5 News.
The video was posted by fellow officer Alex Garza, who suggested Morgan sing a song when he saw a guitar on the table, but didn't think the video would go viral. “Sure enough, as soon as he started singing, he blew us all away with his voice," Garza recalls. "I [posted the video] on Facebook because I thought he could bring a positive reflection on police, to show people that we have hobbies outside of policing."
"Folsom Prison Blues" is one of Cash's signature songs and a staple in country music. It was included on his legendary 1968 album At Folsom Prison, which was recorded live inside Folsom Prison in California. The project topped Billboard's Top Country Albums chart, as well as peaking in the Top 15 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart.
