Texas Tech’s head women’s basketball coach Candi Whitaker agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2020 on Tuesday, December 8, 2015.

Whitaker joined the Lady Raiders in 2013 when the team went 6-24 overall. The team improved to 15-16 last year and is 5-1 this season as of December 8.

According to Tech, Whitaker is the program’s sixth head coach and the first former Lady Raider to hold the position.

Texas Tech’s director of athletics, Kirby Hocutt, said in a statement, “We see a bright future for Lady Raider basketball under Coach Whitaker. It is apparent she and her staff are building something special. We look forward to continuing to see this program develop under her direction.”

“I appreciate the support and commitment Kirby Hocutt and Texas Tech have shown me and the Lady Raider program,” Whitaker said. “There is a process to rebuilding. We are proud of the progress we have shown and are so excited about the future. We have the highest standards and expectations for the program and look forward to competing at the highest level. I am honored to be at Texas Tech and to lead the Lady Raider program.”
