A Houston-area state representative has died from an apparent heart attack.

54-year-old Pasadena Representative Ken Legler died earlier today. He had served in the house since 2008 on environmental regulation and pension committees. Last year during the legislative session he proposed a bill which would require welfare applicants to pass drug tests before receiving aid.

Legler was liked by Democrats and Republicans alike, and is remembered as a fun-loving man. He is survived by his wife and three children.

Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said of Legler “I was saddened to hear the news of Representative Ken Legler’s passing. Ken served his constituents and the citizens of Texas with distinction. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family in their time of mourning.”
