Look, as fun as fireworks are during the 4th of July holiday to us bipedal humans, it's important to remember that dogs have like three to four times better hearing. So, when an explosion is loud for us, imagine how loud it really is for their little ear holes.
This is why the City of Plainview Animal Management reminded all pet owners how they can keep them safe while sparkly bombs are being blown up in the sky.
Protect Your Pets from Loud Fireworks
Some dogs, mine included, get very scared when fireworks are going off and decide to wander around the house because they're too frightened to sit still.
This is just one of the reasons why all fireworks should remain outside of city limits. Also, it's literally illegal to do so otherwise. You can also choose to stay home with your pet if you don't have any plans to leave the house. Doing this along with keeping all doors and windows closed will help calm down your anxious pets.
Now, if you want your dog to look like a cute little burrito, you can also get them ThunderShirts. These are relatively inexpensive and serve as compression wraps for your dogs.
Here's another pro tip: Take your dog for a long walk or tire them out playing fetch in the backyard before the fireworks begin. This way they're nice and tired and more likely to sleep through the night.
Escaping Animals Are No Fun
If your cat, dog, or even horse decides that today's the day and run away while panicking, then there are some steps to consider beforehand. For instance, microchipping your cats and dogs will help you never lose track of them.
Also, double checking your fencing around your horses to make sure it couldn't be easily knocked over will save you a lot of headaches and money.
It's America's 250th birthday! Let's all enjoy this 4th of July and give it the attention it deserves, but make sure you save some of that attention for your pets. Not that they're un-American, but I don't think they give two hairballs about any holidays. They just care about whether the sky will explode this year again...
