Wednesday on KFYO Mornings with Dave King and Matt Martin Gary Adrian of Ace of Texas and Brent Harrison joined Dave and Matt to talk about property taxes and your chance to appeal and get exemptions.

Adrian started the discussion by explaining that property taxes are the main source for funding for schools, hospitals, cities, and more since Texas does not have a state income tax, but even though they are annoying, he has a way to help. On April 1st or as soon as possible, tax notices are mailed out giving estimates on what your property is worth. Gary's job is to help you appeal this cost and get exemptions. "What we do is find out if the property is valued fairly or not, we take care of the protest process, gather all the information we need, meet with the LCAT appraisers, go to the appraiser review board hearings, whatever we need to take it out of the hands of the taxpayer." He deals with residential, single family housing, duplexes, and quadruplexes.

Brent Harrison works on property taxes for commercial properties, including: apartments, strip centers, office buildings, and some land. Harrison stresses that a lot of businesses don't know that they have to pay property taxes on their assets, furniture, equipment, and inventory. He will help you get exemptions for these if you can. He also mentioned that he can help you get an extension for your appeal.

Taxes don't technically need to be payed until Janyary, and your statement does not come out until November, but after your notice is mailed on April 1st, you only have until March 15th to appeal and try to get exemptions on your property tax.
