Elections
Taiwan recently had their elections this past Saturday, January 13, and President Xi of China is in opposition of that political party that. Ambassador Nagy states that he believes this win will affect the relationship between China and the U.S. as this might allow for China to practice more live fire exercises, fly overs, and full blockade training. The concern is that if that occurs that the U.S. might have to step in and intervene to stop those efforts.
Guatemala's new President Arevalo won his election in August of 2023 but their congress did not want to certify him. President Arevalo was inaugurated on January 15, 2024 and promised the people that he would transform Guatemala from the corrupt system that is in place and make the necessary changes. Ambassador Nagy did let us know that the reason for the blocking of Guatemala's congress is due to them still being a part of the outgoing political party.
Day in Court
Israel is being taken to the International Court of Justice by South Africa on the claims of genocide against Palestine due to the war in Gaza. The hearings were set for Thursday, January 11, and Friday, January 12, with both sides presenting different sides of what is currently ongoing in Gaza between Israel and Palestine. South Africa and Palestine have supported each other for years especially during the South African Apartheid from the 1940's to the 1990's.
As Russia is still at war with Ukraine a Russian spy plane was shot down off the coast of Ukraine. The way that Ukraine shot this plane down was due to a U.S. patriot missile but there is no confirmation on if that missile was in fact a patriot missile. This confirmation could prove to be useful information to the United States as it would increase the projected range for future patriot missiles.
