Following the GOP's sweeping political wins Tuesday and the election of Greg Abbott as his successor, Governor Rick Perry said that the American public sent a "clear message."

"Conservative policies are working in Texas, and tonight's victories will help to ensure that the pro-job economic principles we have enacted will live on and allow our citizens to thrive and prosper well into the future," Perry said in a statement.

Abbott won his race for Governor of Texas, while state Senator Dan Patrick was elected Lt. Governor and Sen. John Cornyn was reelected to the U.S. Senate. The GOP wrested control of the Senate from the Democrats with key victories in several states.

"Instead of higher taxes to fuel ever-expanding government programs, they chose fiscal sanity and voted to allow people to keep more of their own hard-earned money," he added. "Now it is time to lead and craft common-sense policies that make America energy independent, bring sanity to our tax code, and secure our border once and for all."
