An area center focusing on helping people with certain types of disabilities is changing their name.

The Lubbock Regional MHMR Center has operated for 45 years, but will change their name to StarCare Specialty Health System.

This change comes following the U.S. Congress’ passage of “Rosa’s Law” in 2010, which strikes the term mental retardation from all federal laws and publications, and instead uses the term “intellectual disability."

The Texas Legislature followed suit last session and passed a law calling for the use of respectful language in reference to people with disabilities.

As a celebration of the group’s new name, StarCare Specialty Health System will host “Dancing Under the Stars” at the Merket Alumni Center on Saturday, June 23rd. The event will also feature a video history of the Lubbock MHMR Center, and a look to the future of the organization.

The festivities begin with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m., and dancing until midnight. The Merket Alumni Center is located off of 17th Street and University Avenue.
