Two children have been found living by themselves in an abandoned school bus in a small town northeast of Houston.

The siblings, an 11-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy, were taken by child welfare officials and are now in foster care.

Authorities found the children living in the bus, and believe that they have lived there since the beginning of 2012. Their parents were sent to prison for conspiring to embezzle money from Hurricane Ike victims, according to Houston’s KTRK News.

An aunt would reportedly check on the children each night and sometimes bring them food. The bus had electricity and air conditioning, but the children were quite dirty when authorities first discovered the scene.
