During the school year, parents sometimes have a lot on their plate. A doctor's appointment here, a soccer game there, and that's not even mentioning their own work schedule. This is why carpooling and buses are so helpful for parents, but sometimes, that's also not an option.

This raises the question of how young is too young for kids to walk to school alone, especially in Lubbock where it's easy to get lost.

Texas Laws on Unattended Children

The gist is this: Technically, there is no specific age at which a child in Texas can walk to school alone. This is one of the few laws regarding children in the state where parents have full discretion.

This doesn't mean that parents can just send their 8-year-old kids off to school every day at random. Texas law still requires the parent to protect their children from danger or harm. Meaning that children should never be sent alone through a dangerous environment where they could get hurt.

If a child is injured while walking to school alone, there is fault with the parents who could risk substantial legal troubles or even losing custody of their child.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to contact your child's school and ask about any policy they may have for unattended children coming to or leaving campus alone.

It's Not Just Age to Consider

In fact, the Texas-based attorneys at Stephens Law argues that there are other factors that matter much more than the actual age of the child walking alone to school.

For instance, how mature the child is for their age or how well they know the path. It's one thing to send them to school along a route that they've walked with or without their parents time after time before. It's another to have them walk to a brand new school through paths they've never seen.

Also, the distance and the intensity of the route matter much more than age. Walking two blocks down the road is way different than walking halfway across town through busy intersections.

Finally, and in my opinion, the most important factor is how safe the neighborhood is. No parent should ever send their child of any age to walk alone through a crime-filled neighborhood, no matter how long they've lived there.

If you visit the Homes and Rentals website, you can see all of Lubbock's middle and elementary schools and where they are in relation to notable parks and spots in the city.

Hopefully, this will help you decide if you feel your child would be safe enough walking to school by themselves. Oh, and don't forget to keep up with the calendar for the LISD 2026-2027 academic school year to see the upcoming holidays and testing days.
