“The Shining” Star Shelley Duvall Dies at 75
World-renowned actress and Texas-native Shelley Duvall has passed away today due to complications of diabetes. Duvall had been fighting the disease in hospice care for months prior to her death. She was 75.
Duvall died at her home in Blanco, TX after decades of on-screen entertainment. According to Dan Gilroy, Duvall's life partner since 1989, "she's gone after much suffering."
The star-studded career of Shelley Duvall
Duvall began her career with her first on-screen performance in a 1970 Robert Altman comedy "Brewster McCloud". One of her more iconic roles was also in a 1980 Altman film called Popeye where she played Olive Oyl alongside the late Robin Williams.
Legendary director Stanley Kubrick eventually was impressed enough with her acting ability that he casted her in his 1980 film "The Shining". Duvall played the female lead and protective mother Wendy alongside the protagonist Jack Nicholson.
In 1992, Duvall presented "Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories" with notable names in Hollywood like Robin Williams, Elliot Gould, Molly Ringwald and Jamie Lee Curtis.
Duvall's return to Texas
After retiring in 2002 from acting, Duvall lived a more reclusive and private life where she began struggling more with her mental health.
In 2016, on an episode of "Dr. Phil", Shelley Duvall publicized her mental health concerns. At 67 years old at the time, she then returned to her private life until taking up acting once more in a 2023 indie horror film "The Forest Hills".
Shelley Duvall is survived by her life partner, Dan Gilroy, and her three brothers, Scott, Stewart and Shane.
