Just over a month ago, Texas Tech added some depth to the quarterback room with a Utah State transfer, Henry Colombi, who knows Matt Wells and David Yost's offensive system.

After Colombi transferred in, he applied for a waiver with the NCAA to grant eligibility for the 2020 season instead of waiting until 2021. Texas Tech has had its fair share of problems with the NCAA waiver system, but this one went right through; Colombi is available to play right away.

Colombi played in two seasons with the Utah State Aggies after a redshirt year and was the main backup for star quarterback Jordan Love. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at Texas Tech, or is it three now? I'm having trouble keeping up with the NCAA's convoluted waiver system and the eligibility fairy.

In his collegiate career, Colombi has played in mostly garbage time, recording 599 yards of total offense, which included 460 yards through the air on 53-of-69 passing, which is an impressive 77 percent clip.

Wells has been adamant so far this offseason that Alan Bowman is the team's starting quarterback, but that was before Colombi was eligible. Now, the race begins between two "veteran" players who do have college experience, but neither a starter for an extended period of time.

It might be that Bowman still takes the first and last snap of the season and has an All-Big 12 season, but the quarterback position is a whole lot stronger with an eligible Colombi ready to step in if Bowman or Maverick McIvor aren't available.
