Back on June 26th, Texas Tech Director of Athletics Communications Matt Dowdy said that out of 197 coronavirus tests, 23 members of the football program tested positive. That testing included both student-athletes and staff.

Since June 26th, the City of Lubbock has confirmed 3,903 positive cases of coronavirus, while the Texas Tech football team has reported just three. The latest round of testing ahead of the Red Raiders fall camp getting underway included 168 tests with zero positive tests.

Here is the complete press release from Texas Tech athletics:

Texas Tech Athletics announced Thursday it has completed 168 additional tests for COVID-19 among its football student-athletes, coaches and support staff with no positive results.

To date, Texas Tech has performed more than 600 tests for COVID-19 among its student-athlete population across all sports currently on campus. The football program has reported 26 positive cases during that time, all of which are recovered.

Texas Tech performed its COVID-19 tests on Wednesday, just two days before the Red Raiders officially open preseason practices for the 2020 season. The Red Raiders will officially report for a series of preseason meetings later this afternoon prior to Friday’s first practice.

Texas Tech football gets underway today, August 6th, with the first day of classes set to begin on August 24th. There will be plenty of opportunities for the Red Raiders to take online classes this semester to create a pseudo-bubble for the football team that helps to keep the momentum going. The team is reportedly scheduled to now start on September 12th against Houston Baptist.
