Texas Tech Football Retracts 2017 Season Opener Date Change

The below story has been updated following a press release from Texas Tech Athletics.

Tuesday morning (April 18), it was reported by KAMC that Texas Tech Athletics would bump the Red Raiders’ 2017 season opener against Eastern Washington to Sunday, September 3rd to accommodate a FOX Sports telecast.

However, Tuesday afternoon, Texas Tech Associate Director, Athletics Communications Matthew Dowdy retracted that change, saying that the game between Texas Tech and Eastern Washington will remain on Saturday, September 2nd. It will air on one of FOX's networks, Dowdy added.

"Earlier today, Tech announced the game was moved to Sept. 3 after a request was made by the Big 12 and FOX Sports on Feb. 24, 2017, to change the date as part of Tech’s third-tier agreement," Dowdy said. "Following discussions today with Eastern Washington, FOX Sports and the Big 12 office, it was decided to keep the game on Sept. 2."

The below statement from Texas Tech regarding the movement of the game was originally released:

“The public release of the schedule change with Eastern Washington has caused conflicts that we are working to resolve at this time. We are currently in contact with both FOX Sports and Eastern Washington. We will provide an update on an official game time and date as soon as possible.”
