Texas CBP Warns: Fake Smuggler Posts Are Luring People Into Danger
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in El Paso is issuing a warning to all Texas communities about an increase in false information spread on social media from illegal smuggling organizations.
Illegal Smuggling in Texas
In a recent release from CBP, they state that criminal organizations are intentionally providing misleading information to vulnerable people in order to lure them into illegal smuggling operations.
El Paso Sector Interim Chief Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar voiced his distaste in these efforts:
These criminal networks are putting lives at risk by spreading lies to exploit people for profit. They use social media to create false hope, but the reality is these journeys often end in tragedy.
Texas Border Patrol Efforts Remain Strong
CBP emphasized that immigration laws remain the same. Those attempting illegal entry through the El Paso Port of Entry or others will face arrest and immediate removal.
Border officers urge anyone seeking entry into the U.S. to do so the legal way through the official immigration process rather than fall victim to smugglers.
Fugitive Apprehended Along Texas Border
This warning from CBP comes just one day after Eagle Pass port officers apprehended 45-year-old Jose Lopez, a Mexican citizen, after discovering he had an outstanding felony warrant for indecency with a child by sexual contact.
Lopez's warrant was issued by the Delta County Sheriff's Office in Cooper, TX, and he was turned over to Maverick County to await his criminal proceedings.
Lopez's criminal history and outstanding warrant were discovered after officers ran biometric verification through the National Crime Information Center, an online network that allows law enforcement from all over to identify criminals.
