Events Leading Up to The Accident

The driver, 27-year-old David Bowman, was arrested on May 1, 2026. According to Everything Lubbock, Bowman was called by a drunk friend to be the designated driver and take several people home that night.

Martinez was walking alongside the white line of the southbound access road of West Loop 289 when Bowman was entering the ramp. Video surveillance caught the front right portion of Bowman's Nissan striking Martinez as he was walking. Bowman did not stop right away but instead chose to continue driving home.

A contributing factor to the incident was that Martinez did however fail to yield to the vehicle as a pedestrian.

A total of 20 vehicles matched the description of the car that struck Martinez. Investigators soon found the correct one after dried blood was discovered on the crumpled hood of Bowman's SUV.

An arrest warrant was issued for David Bowman on April 29, 2026, and was sent to the Lubbock County Detention Center. He has since bailed out of his $25,000 bond.
