School choice isn't completely dead in the 85th Texas Legislature, but a strong message was sent on Thursday during debate over the budget in the Texas House. According to the Texas Tribune, debate over an amendment to the budget that would prevent state money from being used to subsidize private school tuition began early on Thursday.

After debate House member voted in favor of the amendment by a vote of 103-44. While not at all the final word on vouchers and school choice, the message was clear. The Texas House is no where close to approving vouchers in Texas.

According to the Texas Tribune, Senate Bill 3 would create two programs for Education Savings Accounts.

After the budget is approved by the House, members of the Texas Senate and House will work to reconcile the two budgets. While it is possible that school choice could still be heard in the House, some lawmakers have predicted that it won't come close to passing.
