Suspect in Lubbock Shooting Linked to 1996 Attempted Murder
It was discovered that a man in Lubbock, who was recently charged with murder and aggravated assault, had a previous attempted murder case nearly 30 years ago.
Paxton's First Arrest
These current charges follow 48-year-old Paxton Kubica's first arrest back in 1996 when he and an accomplice kidnapped a Texas Tech student before taking him 13 miles away to an abandoned house and shooting him between the eyes.
The student, who survived the attack, was able to remove the bullet from his head with his fingers and walk multiple miles to get help.
Kubica and his accomplice were both charged with attempted murder and aggravated kidnapping and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Kubica was released in 2016.
The Second Arrest of Paxton Kubica
Kubica was recently arrested and charged with the murder of one of his roommates in their Lubbock home, among other crimes.
According to Everything Lubbock, officers responded to a call on the 5600 block of East County Road. When LPD arrived on the scene, they found one Bronnie Paul Vaughn, 55, dead from gunshot wounds. Another roommate, George Deleon, 40, was discovered with serious injuries.
It was found that Kubica had been staying with three separate roommates in a temporary living situation. The day the incident occurred, Kubica had been alone with his girlfriend when he became highly suspicious of his roommates.
Kubica claimed that he didn't want anything bad to happen to his girlfriend, so he began scoping out the other home-dwellers after grabbing his gun.
Kubica first saw Vaughn, whom he shot, before encountering the second roommate, Deleon. Kubica stated he didn't know how many times he fired the gun at Vaughn, but he did shoot Deleon at least once.
The third roommate was in the bathroom when he heard a total of eight gunshots from outside the door. Kubica then ordered him out of the bathroom and held him at gunpoint where he then reportedly said "you're going to die".
Soon after, Kubica forced the roommate to call 911 before he barricaded himself into the bedroom with his girlfriend. When SWAT arrived, they were able to have Kubica surrender.
Paxton Kubica was charged with one count of Murder and two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and remains at the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.
