Should the federal government continue to subsidize agriculture when there are such huge deficits?

In an interview on KFYO, Congressman Randy Neugebauer was asked about likelihood that Congress will continue to subsidize agriculture.

“The whole federal budget is in play here,” Neugebauer said.  “We have to look at how much money we have to spend and how we spend it, and how we prioritize it.”

But Neugebauer continues to defend the subsidies because of what he calls an unlevel playing field.

“Other countries have subsidies and tariffs that they put on American agricultural products.”

If the playing field was level, Neugebauer said, there wouldn’t be a need for a lot of safety net programs for agriculture.
