Schovanec Previews Upcoming Major Announcement at Texas Tech
Wednesday on Sunrise LBK with Dave King and Tom Collins, The President of Texas Tech University Dr. Lawrence Schovanec joined Dave and Tom to talk about the upcoming major announcement at Texas Tech today, the future factory in Lubbock, COVID on campus, groundbreaking on a new facility, Tech basketball and Coach Adams, and more.
The President started the conversation by talking about the major announcement that Texas Tech will give today. Schovanec said that he cannot yet say what exactly it is, but informed everyone that they have received the largest gift ever to come to Texas Tech, that it will benefit the college of agricultural sciences and natural resources, and that he thinks everyone will be very pleased to hear about it when it is announced at 2 P.M. today. Schovanec went on to say, "This is primarily to benefit the academic programs, faculty, research in that college. And so it's a wonderful day for Texas Tech."
Schovanec was also asked to speak on the COVID-19 situation on the Tech campus. He explained that their default plan was to open face-to-face, but in the end they have allowed some courses to be online. Still, he has talked to several students and says that he has been very pleased with the balance that they are striking. Additionally, Texas Tech had 317 recoveries and 259 new cases yesterday. Overall, Tech currently has under 200 active cases, and he hopes they've seen the worst of it. That being said, Schovanec clarified that he doesn't mean to minimize the severity of the issue, as he has had COVID himself.
~Finally, The President talked about his recent trip to Forney, Texas. Schovanec explained that he was in Forney for the groundbreaking for a new facility called the Keith Bell Opportunity Center, which will be a new school that emphasizes career, college, and community with K-12 classes. Forney is one of the fastest growing counties in terms of population, and so Tech is excited to partner with them. They will begin teaching courses in the Fall of 2023 when the construction of the building is complete.
