A Lubbock man has pleaded guilty to the murder of 51-year-old Cristino Gil Ortiz back in 2019.

Back on June 25th, 2019, then-38-year-old Michael Jimenez was arrested for the murder of Ortiz, who was found dead many months earlier inside at Lakeview Apartments, located in the 2100 block of 38th Street.

KAMC News reports that the two originally met at the Salvation Army in Lubbock and were later able to get an apartment together. Ortiz allegedly began insulting Jimenez over him not working while they were drinking one night, and this led to an altercation. It began as a shoving match, then escalated into a fist fight before Jimenez stabbed Ortiz multiple times with a knife.

Jimenez told police that he stabbed Ortiz only four times, but police say that Ortiz was stabbed around 12 times.

Afterwards, Jimenez says that he wrapped Ortiz's body in a bedsheet and put it underneath a bed before he "drank a few beers and watched TV." He then cleaned up the blood and left the apartment about 24 hours after the incident happened.

On Monday, April 11th, Jimenez pleaded guilty to murdering Ortiz. He now faces a maximum of 99 years in prison, but prosecutors have recommended a 40-year sentence.
