Lubbock SWAT Showdown: Man vs. Bomb Squad Robot
A Lubbock man was rudely awakened by a bomb defusal robot after trying to enjoy a peaceful morning at a motel. Oh yeah, he also shot at police officers and had a warrant for his arrest prior to the altercation... Let me explain.
Knock Knock, Who's There?
Felix Delarosa, 39, barricaded himself in his motel room at the Days Inn on 6025 Ave A in Lubbock after the police came a knockin'.
While LPD attempted to make contact with Delarosa, he fired a shot from inside his motel room. This prompted a call for SWAT backup which brought their secret weapon: the Mars Rover.
Okay, it wasn't REALLY the Mars Rover, but it sure looks like it!
You see, after Delarosa shot at the police officers, a member of the sniper team responded with a round of their own, striking him in his room.
Delarosa was down, but not out. What happened later seemed like a scene from a cartoon.
The robot was borrowed from the Lubbock Regional Bomb Squad and eerily crept up to the motel room door to introduce itself, when Delarosa quickly opened the door and threw a sheet over its head! How rude!
Eventually, the robot was able to escape its confines and administer tear gas through the window, smoking Delarosa out and forcing him to exit.
As he was tending to the slight sting in his eyes, he slowly became a temporary parking spot for the robot until authorities could apprehend him and take him to University Medical Center for his injuries.
Felix Delarosa was then arrested and received three charges in one day: aggravated assault against a public servant, parole violation, and tampering with an electronic monitoring device.
