2022 is shaping up to be a year of weather we won't forget anytime soon. For the second time in less than a month, Lubbock set a new daily record for high temperature.

On Wednesday, a new record high temperature was recorded for the date of April 20th. 94 degrees was recorded at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport at 5:15 p.m. The high of 94 broke the previous record for the date of April 20th: 93 degrees, set over 95 years ago in 1925.

Last month, a new record high for Lubbock was set on March 28. The 28th's high of 94 degrees eclipsed the previous record for that date, which was 90 degrees in 1963.

The heat and lack of rainfall have plunged Lubbock and the rest of the South Plains into extreme drought conditions just as spring started for this year.

Through this past week, less than an inch of rain has been recorded for 2022 in Lubbock, and the area now suffering from 'Exceptional Drought' continues to grow.

The drought is also affecting the amount of water at Lake Alan Henry. Twice in 2021, Lake Alan Henry reached 100 percent capacity. However, as of Wednesday, the lake was at 85.1 percent capacity. Just six months prior, on October 20th, 2021, Lake Alan Henry was at 94 percent capacity.

Lake Alan Henry is one of the sources of drinking water for the City of Lubbock, but not the main one. The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority's Lake Meredith still provides the largest amount of water for Lubbock.

And up north in the Texas Panhandle, the drought is also effecting Lake Meredith. On Wednesday, Lake Meredith reported it was at 30.1 percent capacity. Six months prior, Lake Meredith was at 32.4 percent capacity. Lake Meredith is larger than Lake Alan Henry and has to spread its water out amongst a larger population compared to Lake Alan Henry.

At this point, any rainfall received across Lubbock, Amarillo or the rest of West Texas will be greatly appreciated since it will help ranchers and ag producers, and replenish our lakes before summer begins.
