It's official: there will be at least one debate between the two candidates running for mayor in Lubbock, and that debate will take place right here on News/Talk 95.1 & 790 KFYO.

Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope and his opponent Stephen Sanders have both accepted an invitation to debate on KFYO on Monday, October 19th, 2020 during The Chad Hasty Show from 9 to 10:30 a.m.

Both candidates released videos on Facebook last week stating their desire to debate each other at least once during the campaign. A forum hosted by the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce was scheduled to occur on October 12th, but according to Mayor Pope's Facebook video from last week, the Sanders campaign dropped out due to a conflict.

Both candidates have been interviewed on KFYO recently. You can listen to the interview with Mayor Dan Pope here, and with Stephen Sanders here.

Dan Pope was first elected mayor in 2016 and won re-election in 2018. Stephen Sanders has not held elected office before, but this is his second campaign running for Mayor of Lubbock. In 2018, Sanders ran as a write-in candidate.

Normally, the local elections would be held in May, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the city elections are now part of the November 3rd election.

Early voting for the election will begin next Tuesday, October 13 and will run through Friday, October 30th.

KFYO's Chad Hasty will moderate the October 19th debate.
