Is Lubbock Finally One Step Closer to New Splash Pads?
After the permanent closure of most of Lubbock’s public pools, many families were frustrated with the unknown of when they would have new fun summer options for their kids.
The closure of the Clapp, Montelongo, Maxey, and Mae Simmons pools came due to low attendance, especially for young kids. This led the city to make the choice of replacing the pools with new splash pads that are likely to garner more usage.
Splash pads by 2024
The City of Lubbock claimed these new splash pads would be available for the summer of 2024, but many residents have been left surprised by the lack of progress they’ve seen. Maybe it’s the sooner-than-average warm weather that has everyone in a tiff, but they expected to at least see construction by now.
Fortunately, for those that have been waiting, it seems like progress has officially started on these splash pads.
Maxey Park’s swimming pool has officially been demolished, and there seems to be progress made at Rodgers parks for not only the splash pad, but also the new playground that was promised there.
When will they be ready?
As far as the city has said, the plan is still to have the splash pads done this year. At the very least, even if construction is delayed, I hope they will be up and running by the start of next summer.
This is definitely a great addition to Lubbock and I think it will be well-loved by many families.
