High Plains Is No. 1 Grape Producing Region in Texas [INTERVIEW]
Dr. Ed Hellman with the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Texas Tech joined Lubbock's First News on Wednesday to talk viticulture (the study of grapes).
According to Dr. Hellman, high plains is the number one grape-producing region in Texas.
"The grapes here actually supply wineries throughout the state," said Hellman.
The viticulture and enology programs that Dr. Hellman is part of at Texas Tech started back in 2010.
"Right now, especially compared to what I think the job opportunities are, the Texas wine industry is growing and continue to grow very rapidly," said Hellman. "We've got over 300 wineries. There are lots of job opportunities that I don't have students for."
