Friday morning, Texas State Senator Charles Perry appeared on The Chad Hasty Show on News/Talk 790 KFYO to respond to attacks made Thursday by Lubbock City Councilman Victor Hernandez.

Hernandez issued an open letter to Senator Perry on his Facebook page Thursday (April 16) calling Perry a racist, a bigot and describing him as "unchristianly" for being the author of Senate Bill 185, the so-called "Sanctuary Cities" legislation.

Councilman Hernandez called S.B. 185 an "act of terrorism," claiming that the bill "will be the waging of a war on fellow Texans of Latin American descent based upon their complexion, surname, accent, hair color, eye color, etc."

During his first interview on the matter, Perry said the statements issued by Hernandez were "absurd, and outlandish and untrue," as well as distasteful.

"[The] big picture here is, we spent 811 million dollars on border security, to close or tighten up the border," said Perry. "And anytime you have cities interior to the border saying ,'come one, come all, we won't ask and we'll cover, if you will, and not enforce state or federal immigration [law], that's just an undermining that we can't have.

Perry also asserted that Hernandez had not read the bill.
