On the Tuesday edition of The Chad Hasty Show, David Guenthner from the Texas Public Policy Foundation talked with Chad Hasty about the latest coming out of the Texas legislative session.

This week in the legislature, the various committees will star hearing bills, and some of the biggest bills to be discussed involve school reform. Guenthner said that testing reform should be an especially important one. He said he would like to see the tests better reflect the skills students need in order to compete in the job market, and that teachers should not have to be forced to teach to a test.

"To me it seems that if you are making sure that you've got good curriculum and good materials and you've got competent teachers in the classroom, then the tests should really take care of themselves. And that if you do have problems with students not being able to pass the test, then I think you've got to look at, "OK, are our standards good enough? Are our teachers good enough? Are the materials good enough?"

Medicaid will also be an important issue discussed in the legislature. But Guenthner warned that expanding Medicaid would not address any of its core problems, such as the limitations on access to doctors.
