A massive 17-car collision left five people dead on Thursday night in Austin, including three adults, a child and an infant.

According to Austin-Travis County EMS (ATCEMS), rescue efforts were deployed to the scene of the accident on I-35 heading north in Austin. When they arrived, they saw a multiple-vehicle collision that included a semi-truck. At least seven people were in need of rescuing after they were pinned in their vehicles from the impact.

 

 

ATCEMS provided updates shortly after stating that, of the 17 people involved, five were pronounced dead at the scene: three adults, one child, and one infant.

They also reported that 11 others were transported to receive medical care. Four were sent with life threatening injuries, and three children were also rushed to the hospital with potentially life threatening injuries.

The names and ages of those who died and those sent to emergency care are not yet released.

The Austin Police Department also notified the city that the incident, taking place between Parmer Ln and Howard Ln, has shut down all lanes of N I-35 for several hours as emergency vehicles and cleanup crews assess the situation. All drivers were advised to take alternate routes from APD.

As of the time this story was written, these were the only fatalities/injuries reported during this tragic event.
