Texas Hunting Accidents

This story is by no means the first occurrence, as there were 11 total accidents last year alone: 10 non-fatal and one fatal, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife.

TPWD indicated that all incidents, including the ones last year, were highly preventable through proper training and gun education. Between 2019 and 2023, over half of all victims had not completed hunter education training and were not wearing hunter orange clothing.

Real-Life Fatal and Non-Fatal Hunting Incidents

One example comes from last year when a 15-year-old boy placed his loaded rifle into his vehicle, but not before standing in front of the muzzle. That's all it took as the gun discharged due to carelessness. The bullet entered his chest and exited his back, killing him.

TPWD warns hunters to always point the muzzle in a safe direction, and always unload your firearm when you are no longer hunting.

Another example from last year is non-fatal, fortunately. A duck hunter placed his loaded gun on his boat so he and some friends could gather decoys. As his back was turned, his dog stepped on the trigger by accident, firing pellets into the victim's elbow, side, hip, and leg.

TPWD offers preventative measures, such as unloading your firearm or casing it when no longer hunting, even if just for a minute or two.
