Authorities have accused an Amarillo man of cutting off a puppy's ears and trying to sew them back on, according to amarillo.com.

Lubbock police say they found the dog covered in blood in the trunk of Juan Chavira's car. The man faces a felony charge of animal cruelty and the dog is being treated at a shelter.

Chavira's case will go to court on Tuesday, October 9th. Chavira was arrested on August 19th in 1700 block of Avenue R and witnesses say the dog was whimpering from the trunk of the car. Police arrived to find the dog with mangled ears and a body covered in blood.

The dog was taken by a local shelter. His name is "Major" and currently in good spirits.
