There are good ways to attract attention to a local Mexican restaurant. And then there are bad ways, like say, making a racist T-shirt for your employees to wear.

In South Carolina, Taco Cid restaurant is under fire for creating a T-shirt that makes fun of illegal immigrants. The restaurant owner calls the shirt a comment on illegal immigration, but others are claiming the shirt is racist.

A local Mexican restaurant has stirred up an online controversy with its T-shirts that say "How to Catch an Illegal Immigrant," accompanied by a drawing of a box with a stick being held over two tacos.

A photo of a Taco Cid employee wearing one of the shirts generated buzz on many social media sites after it appeared on Twitter last weekend.

Leanne Snelgrove, owner of the West Columbia restaurant, said she was surprised that the T-shirts have caused such a stir nationwide.

"I had a clue it would be a hit around town but not nationwide," she said.

Snelgrove said she has received comments from some people praising the shirts, but also, "We've received death threats; we've received bomb threats."

Asked if she thought the shirts' message might be construed as racist, Snelgrove said, "That's your opinion."

Isn't it funny how every time we try to bring up the topic of illegal immigration, whether we're being serious or joking around, people are so quick to rush out and call us racist? Bomb threats and death threats over a T-shirt is just ridiculous. As is the case with most stories like this, I don't think this lady was being maliciously racist; she probably thought it was funny (and personally, I think it's pretty funny too.)  I'm not saying the shirt was in the best taste, but seriously, people have got to learn to take a joke.
