A poet laureate and grammy award winner will join forces for the last installment of a Texas Tech series.

PoemJazz will close the the 2013-2014 season of the Presidential Lecture and Performance Series at 7 p.m., April 25th in the Texas Tech Allen Theatre.

The evening includes poetry and live jazz with three-time Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky and Grammy award-winning jazz pianist Laurence Hobgood.

PoemJazz is a conversation between the sounds of poetry and music. The duo couples Pinsky’s dramatic reading and Hobgood’s jazz piano to provide a unique musical performance.

“Sentences and lines have melodies and rhythms, and master musicians like the great Laurence Hobgood express feelings,” said Pinsky. “Our performance is a conversation between two kinds of music. It’s comparable to rap – but in a completely different idiom, in language and in musical idiom.”

Pinsky has also authored 19 books, and currently serves as poetry editor of the internet magazine “Slate,” as well as teaching in the graduate writing program at Boston University.

Hobgood is a multiple Grammy-nominee and a 2010 Grammy winner. He is the musical director for Kurt Elling.

General admission tickets for the concert are $18 and are available through all Select-A-Seat locations. You can call 770-2000 or visit www.selectaseatlubbock.com.

Texas Tech students receive one free ticket with a valid student ID at the Student Union Building information booth at the entrance to the Allen Theatre.
