South Plains College today announced the naming of a new Vice President of Student Affairs.  Cathy Mitchell, the former Dean of the South Plains College Reese Center campus will take over her new position on November 1.

According to Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president of South Plains College, “Cathy has done an outstanding job in her roles at South Plains College. Everyone who has ever worked with her understands a lot about her ability. I think she is the person to take Student Affairs forward as we work to accommodate the students and their families.”

In the new role, Mitchell will be responsible for the operations under the Student Affairs umbrella including Admission and Records; Counseling; Dean of Students and the Director of Student Activities. She will be responsible for fulfilling the Student Services goals to help support students and help them obtain their educational goals, she said. Mitchell added that the direction leading her to the new job has closely followed her career path.

“There’s excitement in the air at South Plains College, and I’m excited,” Mitchell said. “I’m ready for the challenges of this new position.”

Prior to joining the administration at SPC in 2000, Mitchell was a teacher for Ropes Independent School District (RISD) for 19 years. She served as a counselor at RISD. At SPC, Mitchell’s first job was as registrar at the main campus in Levelland. She spent five years in that capacity before becoming Dean of Student Life. Four years later, she was appointed to the position of Dean of the Reese Center campus.

According to South Plains College, Mitchell is the first woman to hold this position at SPC.
