The Lubbock Police Department will host a community event this week in recognition of a national day of remembrance.

The event will be held for National Missing Children’s Day this Friday, in the east parking lot of the South Plains Mall, near Slide Road and Olive Garden.

LPD officers will be available to discuss child safety and provide information to parents on ways to talk with their children about safety. Fingerprint kits and other child safety ides will be available at the event as well, which runs from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. Friday.

May 25th has been designated as National Missing Children’s Day since 1983. It was first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan, and is the anniversary of the day in 1979 when 6-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York street corner on his way to school.

The day now serves as a reminder to the nation to make child safety a priority.
