TxDOT has approved some hefty permits for trucks carrying loads to aid in disaster relief for Japan.

The super-heavy permits were approved for a Texas company to use three long-haul rigs, each loaded with a transformer to journey across the state. The twenty-foot wide, 197-foot long super-heavy loads will leave Sweetwater early Wednesday morning, and travel south along Texas highways to the Port of Houston, where they will be shipped to Japan.

TxDOT maintenance employees in Abilene, Brownwood, Fort Worth, Waco, Bryan, and Houston will provide traffic control as the rigs move across the state. Motor Carrier Division Director Carol Davis said “TxDOT divisions and districts worked closely with an engineering consultant to accomplish in a few days what would normally take weeks.”
