Riding in a hot air balloon may be difficult for some disabled people, but University Medical Center and an area ballooning organization can make it happen this weekend.

One of only three hot air balloons in the country will be in Lubbock this weekend for the 4th Annual Fly the Rainbow event.

The basket on the tethered “Fly the Rainbow” balloon allows access to wheelchairs, and will take passengers up to 150 feet in the air.

The event is presented by the Southwest Regional Balloon Club. The balloon club has worked with UMC since 2008 to hold the event, and other balloons will be airborne as well.

The “Fly the Rainbow” event will take place this Saturday at Indiana Avenue Baptist Church, located at 95th Street and Indiana Avenue, and begins at 6:45 a.m.
