There are so many classic films screening this month at multiple theaters that nobody could catch them all, but here is a little info on each regardless.

Creature from the Black Lagoon

Creature from the Black Lagoon is part of Universal’s legendary monster feature series. What is great about this movie is the cinematic ambition. There are multiple, long underwater sequences that had to be an amazing challenge to film in 1954. That, coupled with the amazing use of make-up and practical effects, allowed amazing scenes of the Creature stalking his prey underwater years before Jaws was even conceived.

Frankenstein

The 1931 Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff as Frank’s Monster will also screen this month. There is too much to say about this movie, so I will just say mention the infamous scene of Frank’s Monster by the lake and suggest you catch the screening if that means nothing to you.

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein

This film is Alamo’s last of the Universal Monster Movies and the only one on the list I haven’t seen. I have heard great things about them though and I am excited to see their antics.

Ghostbusters

Alamo is screening Ghostbusters again for the films 30th anniversary. What can I say about Ghostbusters that everybody doesn’t already know? It’s awesome, go see it. There is also news of a franchise reboot starring an all-female cast, so watch the original as it was intended before then. http://screencrush.com/tags/ghostbusters/

Creepshow

One of my all-time Halloween favorites, Creepshow, will screen Saturday, Oct. 18. It features different vignettes including a murderous Leslie Nielsen and a bumbling Stephen King anchored by a boy being punished for reading pulp comics. It’s a classic; don’t miss it.

Shaun of the Dead Quote-along

There will be a few showings of Shaun of the Dead, part of the Cornetto Trilogy at Alamo. These showings will be quote-along events. Shaun is a character that has such few prospects that the end of the world actually provides opportunities for improvement. If you dislike British humor, skip this one. Otherwise, it should be a great event.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror Picture Show is such a fun event no matter where you view it and both Alamo and Premiere Cinemas will have screenings this month. If you have never been to a screening, put it on your bucket list. The film is a cult classic starring Susan Surandon, Barry Bostwick, and Tim Curry and also features Meatloaf. It is a freaky fun black-comedy and musical but the real reason to see it on the silver-screen is for the crowds. People show up in costumes from the film and there are cues throughout the movie for audience participation. It always ends up being good, rowdy fun.

Halloween

John Carpenter’s Halloween will screen on, you guessed it, Halloween. This slasher classic features Jamie Lee Curtis and has more staying power today than many other slashers of the time. Side Note: the two recent Halloween reboots from Rob Zombie are entertaining and worth a watch if you enjoy the franchise.

Cronos

Texas Tech University has been screening films at Alamo Drafthouse this semester as part of their International Film Series. This month they will play Guillermo del Toro’s Cronos. Del Toro is the director of Pan’s Labyrinth, The Devil’s Backbone, and more recently, Hellboy II and Pacific Rim. Cronos is actually Del Toro’s directorial debut and is a masterful story of an ancient alchemical device and the destruction that follows it.
