Obama and ISIS

Is President Obama softening his resolve against ISIS? On Friday the administration laid out their new national security strategy and the new strategy against ISIS is to degrade and defeat the terror group. Previously, Obama had said that the United States wanted to destroy ISIS. According to the Washington Times, there is a difference in the two.

“A big difference in terms of commitment and resources,” said Robert Maginnis, a retired Army officer and military analyst. “Destroying the enemy, depending on the nature of the enemy a state or non-state actor, means we will kill all combatants and their means to continue the fight––factories, transportation networks, economy.

“Defeat could mean a political solution that leaves the enemy combatants alive and ready to fight another day.”

ISIL, an extremely violent Sunni terror army, now controls large portions of territory in Iraq and Syria.

The U.S. launched an air campaign last August, but Mr. Obama has ruled out the introduction of ground combat forces, saying the Iraq army must fill that void.

I just wonder how committed the President is to protecting our country. ISIS should be destroyed along with other terror groups in the world.

Flat Tax and the Fair Tax Embraced by Republicans

The Texas Tribune has a good piece out today about where potential Republican candidates for 2016 fall when it comes to taxes. It seems as though many Republicans would support a flat tax as a way to get to a fair tax system. Rick Perry has spoken in favor of the 20% flat tax on all income levels. Though Perry has reportedly been meeting with advisers on tweaking his flat tax proposal.

Senator Rand Paul would like to cut taxes and has embraced both the flat and the fair tax but it seems he would rather move in the direction of the fair tax.

According to the Texas Tribune, Senator Ted Cruz is all for the fair tax.

“We should let taxes become so simple that they could be filled out on a postcard,” Cruz wrote in a column for USA Today in October.

Yet while Cruz has called for converting the country’s progressive income tax system to a flat tax, his office confirmed that the Fair Tax is his long-term goal.

“The senator supports a Fair Tax, ultimately,” spokeswoman Catherine Frazier said. “However, the most immediate, effective way to implement comprehensive tax reform is to pass a simple flat tax — so simple that Americans can file on a postcard. This should be the starting point for reform, and once it's in place we should pursue a Fair Tax.”

It's a good debate for Republicans to have and one the country should embrace. It won't be easy, but something has to change when it comes to taxes in this country.
