The new ‘Birdman‘ trailer only confirms what we thought after the first preview from a few months ago: this is going to be one of the strangest movies of 2014 and we can’t wait to see it. Not only does it feature the great Michael Keaton once again playing a leading role, it finds director Alejandro Iñárritu trying something completely different after building his career on the backs of some of the most depressing movies of all time. Yes, this one is a comedy.
In a bit of self-referential casting, Keaton plays a washed-up actor who is best known for playing a superhero named “Birdman” in a series of films decades ago. Now a walking joke, he attempts to revive his career by directing and starring in a Broadway show. However, the road to redemption isn’t so easy. He finds himself facing the usual trials you’d expect in the live stage production, but he also starts to, uh, go crazy. Or something. All we know is that the trailer is full of all kinds of truly wild imagery that has to be seen to be believed.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a black comedy that tells the story of an actor (Michael Keaton) — famous for portraying an iconic superhero — as he struggles to mount a Broadway play. In the days leading up to opening night, he battles his ego and attempts to recover his family, his career, and himself.
Everything about ‘Birdman’ looks like a home run, but one big question remains: can Iñárritu make a funny movie? And will his ambitions (the film is rumored to made up of only a few very, very long shots) pay off? We shall see when the movie opens on October 17, 2014.
