Yes, You Can Still Enjoy Halloween Candy While Eating Healthy
Halloween is coming up and while you may not have as many trick-or-treaters walking around this year compared to last, you still want to be prepared with Halloween candy.
Brenda Garcia with United Supermarkets joined us this week to discuss something that happens, at least at our house, every year after Halloween. Leftover Halloween candy. Garcia told listeners that it is just fine to indulge in Halloween candy as long as you use control and don't eat the entire bowl. In fact, Garcia said that Halloween candy being bite-sized is perfect because you can limit your intake. Garcia suggested using the 80/20 method which means eating healthy 80% of the time and for those small times you want to indulge, do it, but responsibly.
Garcia even suggested having fun with the leftover candy and pairing the candy with fruit.
Last week, Garcia talked about mixing things up in your trail-mix by using the 80/20 method. Just as we discussed with Halloween candy, in trail-mix you can have 80% healthy ingredients and 20% not so healthy. Garcia suggested using nuts like cashews which contain zinc and walnuts which contain omega 3 acids. She also suggested dried fruit as an ingredient. For the 20% fun stuff, Garcia suggested M&M's, popcorn, and candy corn. Trail-mix can be a healthy, fun, and delicious snack that is perfect for this time of year.
