If you have purchased butter recently from Costco, you may need to check your refrigerator to see if butter you have purchased is now being recalled.

The recall is on the Kirkland Signature butter. Specifically, the Kirkland Signature Sweet Cream Butter, both the salted and unsalted versions of the butter. According to the website, FoodandWine.com, the recall was initially sent out by the FDA in October. The recall is on 79,200 pounds of butter that was produced by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC. The recall is due to what the FDA described as an "undeclared allergen".

On November 7, the FDA classified the recall as a Class II, according to FoodandWine.com. That means there could be adverse health consequences.

"a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

Why Is Costco Recalling Butter?

According to reports Costco is having to recall the Kirkland's Signature Sweet Cream Butter, both salted and unsalted, because the packaging doesn't have "Contains Milk" visible on the packaging.

According to FoodandWine.com, the recalled butter was produced and distributed in Texas. The products come with a "best by" date between February 22, 2025 and March 29, 2025.

What Should You Do About the Recalled Butter?

If you and no one in your family has a milk allergy, don't worry about it. The butter is safe. The FDA has given no guidance on what to do with the butter, but if you or someone in you family is allergic, you could possibly return the butter or just throw the butter away.
