
FDA Warns Texans of Possible Radioactive Frozen Shrimp Sold From Major Retailer
The Food and Drug Administration has made an urgent appeal to and Walmart has agreed to begin the recall process of some frozen shrimp packages due to the risk that the shrimp could be radioactive and should not be eaten. The shrimp were sold in Texas and other states.
FDA Warns That Frozen Shrimp Could Be Radioactive
Frozen shrimp sold at Walmart under the Great Value Label are at risk of being radioactive accord to the Food and Drug Administration. In response, Walmart said it is recalling some frozen shrimp packages that have been identified as being possibly being contaminated.
According to CBS News, Walmart says there is a sales restriction on those bags and those shrimp have been removed from the impacted stores. These shrimp were sold in stores across the United States including in Texas. The FDA has warned the public not to serve or eat the following:
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027
- Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027.
What Should You Do If You Bought The Recalled Shrimp?
Simply put, if you have these shrimp, the FDA says to just throw them away. You can contact Walmart and ask for a refund.
Are The Shrimp Really Radioactive?
According to CBS News, the shrimp could be contaminated with, "a radioactive isotope called Cesium-137, although the FDA said that no products as of yet have tested positive for it. The agency said it issued the warning about Walmart's Great Value shrimp after it had detected Cesium-137 in a single shipment of frozen shrimp from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati".
So while that shipment didn't enter U.S. commerce, it's still better to be safe than sorry.
