Because of this, Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has provided safety tips for severe weather during tornadoes and hurricanes.

Texas Hurricane and Tornado Safety Tips

First, it's recommended that you always have an emergency kit on hand that includes essentials for survival in bad conditions. Some crucial items include the following:

  • Water bottles
  • Non-perishable food like granola bars or crackers
  • A first aid kit
  • Flashlights with multiple spare batteries of different kinds
  • Battery-powered radio
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Important family and/or personal documents

When it comes to evacuation, DPS advises that you always plan at least two routes to exit your home/property before disaster strikes. Work out evacuation plans with your kids in case you get split up during an emergency.

Preparations for Getaways and Pet Evacuations

Also, keep an eye on your local weather channel, and if you see that severe storms and high winds are incoming, take some time to fill your car with gas just in case you need to make an emergency getaway.

If you have any pets or people with extra care requirements, make sure you have a game plan for transporting and supporting them during tornado or hurricane threats. This means packing extra cat/dog food in bags and storing any crucial medication for emergencies.

Severe Weather is No Joke!

Lastly, find out how you can sign up for emergency alerts within your city or county. This way you can stay in the know with real time updates from local authorities on when you should either seek cover or evacuate your home.

Emergency weather is always scary, but the more you are prepared, the better chance you have of avoiding unnecessary roadblocks in keeping your property and family safe.

And remember, as cool as tornadoes and hurricanes are, it's never worth it to step outside and attempt to view it with your own eyes... pretty awesome, but way too dangerous.
